Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN), in partnership with the University of Minho (UMinho), will manage and coordinate the national implementation of Phase IV of the MIT Portugal Programme (MPP) until 2030. The contract, signed with the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), provides for an annual budget of approximately €500,000.
This new phase introduces a shift in governance to strengthen the programme’s national reach. Following coordination by Instituto Superior Técnico (Phases I and II) and the University of Minho (Phase III), responsibility is now shared with the University of Coimbra through IPN, which takes on the programme’s executive management. The National Directors of the MIT Portugal Programme will be João Pedro Barreto (University of Coimbra) and Alexandre Ferreira da Silva (University of Minho).
For João Gabriel Silva, President of the Board at IPN, this appointment reflects the institution’s trajectory: “The selection of IPN for the Executive Management of the MIT Portugal Programme is a milestone that validates our decades-long journey in bridging the gap between academic knowledge and the market. We are ready to provide MIT Portugal with high operational efficiency,” he notes.
Phase IV will continue to foster collaboration between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Portuguese universities, research centres, laboratories, and companies, aiming to bolster scientific excellence and knowledge transfer to the economy.
"This phase intends to pay double attention to applied science, where collaboration with MIT will result in tangible solutions for concrete challenges through a more agile and impact-oriented project model,” emphasises João Pedro Barreto, National Director of the MIT Portugal Programme.
The strengthening of this partnership is also seen as a significant step for the internationalisation of the national scientific system. “This programme consolidates Coimbra as a technological hub of international relevance, creating the conditions for national talent to lead new technological transformations,” highlights the Rector of the University of Coimbra, Amílcar Falcão.
Current developments include a new model for collaborative research projects, with a call for applications open until 25 May, and the university entrepreneurship initiative “MIT Portugal 100K” — a student-led competition whose national final was recently hosted at IPN.
Since its inception in 2006, the MIT Portugal Programme has played a central role in modernising and internationalising the Portuguese scientific landscape, involving hundreds of researchers and collaborative projects in strategic areas such as energy, bioengineering, and transport.
