LABGEO (Laboratory for Geotechnics) develops research and specialised services in the areas of geotechnics, resources and environment, targeted towards innovation and solving societal problems.

What we do

LABGEO (Laboratory for Geotechnics) mainly aims to provide specialised services in the fields of geotechnics and foundation engineering and seeks to respond to increasing geotechnical activities and demands arising from Eurocode publications. These objectives are fulfilled with the support of a flexible and dynamic structure that is capable of responding effectively to the demands of companies and organisations providing innovative and specialised services. The main targets are small and medium sized companies, engineering offices and institutions involved in geotechnical works, the production of aggregates and environmental geotechnics.

LABGEO is accredited by the Instituto Português de Acreditação (IPAC), according to the NP EN ISO/IEC 17025: 2018 standard. As of 27 June 2024, LABGEO's accreditation is suspended for a maximum period of 12 months.

The close collaboration between LABGEO, the Civil Engineering Department (Soils Mechanics/Geotechnical Laboratory) and the Earth Sciences Department (Geotechnical Laboratory) of the University of Coimbra leads to an effective approach towards geotechnical problems, from the simplest to the more complex ones.

LABGEO develops its activities simultaneously in the following domains:

Geological and geotechnical studies (transportation infrastructures, artwork)
Classification, stability and stabilisation studies of natural and artificial slopes
Geological and geotechnical consulting and technical reports
Environmental consulting and technical reports
Laboratory tests (soils, aggregates, rocks and natural stones)
Field tests (geotechnical prospection, geotechnical instrumentation and construction control)
Development of techniques and technologies, AI (Artificial Intelligence) and VR (Virtual Reality) associated with geotechnics, geological resources, the environment
Development and use of geophysics, associated with hydrogeology, geological resources, geotechnics, geothermal energy, the environment
Developing techniques and technologies as part of the circular economy, for the utilisation of waste from the extractive industry and human activity. Remediation, Valorisation and Recycling
