Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) will hold, on 8 June 2026, the seminar “Xylella fastidiosa: current situation, epidemiology and management challenges”, dedicated to one of the main phytosanitary challenges of today.
The event will take place in the auditorium of Building D at IPN,Coimbra, between 09:15 and 12:30, bringing together experts, authorities and sector professionals to reflect on the impact and evolution of the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, whose spread represents a growing global threat.

In a context marked by the need for coordinated responses, the meeting aims to promote the sharing of scientific and technical knowledge, as well as to foster dialogue between entities responsible for the monitoring and management of this disease. Throughout the morning, institutional perspectives on the national situation will be presented, complemented by relevant international experiences.

The programme begins with an opening session led by Joana Costa, Director of the Plant Health Laboratory at IPN (FITOLAB). This will be followed by a presentation from Clara Serra, from Direção-Geral de Alimentação e Veterinária (DGAV), who will outline the current situation of Xylella fastidiosa in Portugal, highlighting the main challenges in surveillance and control measures.

The scientific component will feature Rodrigo Almeida, Researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, who will share the United States’ experience in the epidemiology and management of the bacterium in vineyards, offering a practical perspective based on real cases.

The session will also include a debate and Q&A session, encouraging the exchange of ideas between participants and speakers, before closing.

Participation is free of charge, but registration is required until 4 June 2026, via the registration form available here.

This conference is an activity of the IPN CTI project, supported by the base funding component of the Centre for Technology and Innovation (CTI), under the terms of the Call for Proposals (AAC) No. 03/C05-i02/2022, within the framework of the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Programme (PRR).
