Between 31 March and 1 April 2026, the Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) hosted the official launch of the ROOT project – Resources for Orientation and Occupational Transition. With funding of around €1 million through the Erasmus+ programme, this Forward-Looking project, aims to address the skills gap in the Earth Observation (EO) sector by supporting workers and SMEs in their professional training and retraining.

On the first day of the meeting, around 20 experts from the various partner countries — including Portugal, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium — gathered at IPN to define the strategic roadmap for the next three years. During this working meeting, the foundations were laid for the three Living Labs that the project will implement, serving as testing grounds for new career guidance and skills development tools.

The highlight was the presentation and dissemination event open to the community. This meeting was attended by key players from the ‘quadruple helix’: academia, industry, policymakers and civil society. The agenda featured a session led by Vasco Mantas (University of Coimbra) and a presentation by the company Teromovigo, delivered by Machiel Bos.

Moderated by Fátima Matias, the discussion centred on the urgent need to align academic and professional training with the real needs of the aerospace market, particularly in the Earth Observation (EO) sector.

Over the next three years, ROOT will develop innovative resources for career guidance professionals (career advisers, HR managers) and create specific upskilling programmes, strengthening the national and European business ecosystem, and disseminating these results at European level so that they can be replicated by other organisations.

ROOT is coordinated by IPN and includes the partners QUASAR Human Capital, Eupportunity, EfVET, Dotspace, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Fondazione E. Amaldi and GISIG.
