Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) provides specialised phytosanitary diagnostic services for vineyards, supporting producers and technicians in the early detection of pests that threaten the productivity and sustainability of the wine sector.
It is estimated that between 20% and 40% of global agricultural production is lost due to pests and diseases, according to FAO data. In the specific case of viticulture, some phytosanitary threats can have particularly severe impacts. Diseases such as Flavescence Dorée can reduce productivity by between 51% and 92%, while emerging pathogens such as
Xylella fastidiosa pose a growing risk to European vineyards.
In view of these challenges, IPN provides a range of laboratory services and specialised technical support that enable producers to identify phytosanitary problems early on and make informed decisions about the management of their crops.
About the service:
IPN performs analyses to detect various organisms that affect grapevines, including:
- Bacteria: Xylella fastidiosa (Pierce’s disease)
- Phytoplasmas: Flavescence Dorée and Bois Noir
- Grapevine trunk disease (GTDs): ESCA complex, Botryosphaeria and Blackfoot disease
- Root rot diseases: Phytophthora spp. and Armillaria mellea
- These analyses enable the identification of pathogens present in plants, soil or plant material, contributing to more effective and sustainable management strategies.
Phytosanitary diagnosis allows producers to:
- Intervene early, preventing the spread of disease
- Reduce costs by avoiding unnecessary treatments
- Make agronomic decisions based on laboratory data
- Preserve the productive potential of the vineyard
About IPN:
IPN, based in Coimbra, is a nationally and internationally renowned technological interface institution that supports companies and entrepreneurs in applied research, technological development, innovation, and product and process validation.
The IPN’s Phytopathology Lab (FITOLAB) was the first national laboratory accredited in the field of plant health and is recognised by the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary Affairs (DGAV) as an Official Laboratory for the diagnosis of regulated plant diseases.
