The Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) reached an important milestone by pioneering remote ultrasound training. IPN conducted the first hands-on abdominal ultrasound course between two countries – with the specialist in Łódź, Poland, and the trainees in Covilhã, Portugal. This innovation demonstrates the potential of the telemedicine robotic technology developed by IPN to make advanced medical training more accessible and scalable across borders.
This achievement was made possible thanks to the tele-ultrasound robotic system developed by IPN in collaboration with the University of Coimbra (UC) and its innovative co-manipulation algorithm, which enables the robot to be operated “with two hands.” This technology allows the specialist not only to demonstrate ultrasound examination procedures remotely but also to guide and correct the trainees in real time, offering a highly collaborative hands-on experience, even thousands of kilometers apart.
The session took place on September 18th during an abdominal ultrasound masterclass organized by IPN, with the support of the Medical University of Łódź, Medical Skills, and Ubimedical.
The TrainR4U project, led by Instituto Pedro Nunes (Portugal), brings together the University of Coimbra, NOVA Medical School, and the Local Health Unit of Coimbra (Portugal), Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu and Fundación Joan de Déu (Spain), Medical University of Łódź (Poland), Tecnalia Research & Innovation (Spain), Sensing Future Technologies (Portugal), and Medical Skills (Portugal).
