Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN), coordinator of the VR Health Champions project, announces the opening of Open Call 2026, aimed at SMEs across Europe that develop innovative Virtual Reality (VR) or Augmented Reality (AR) solutions for healthcare. Applications are open until 30 November 2025.
VR Health Champions is a three-year initiative funded by the EU under the Interregional Innovation Investment Instrument (I3) of the European Regional Development Fund, with a total budget of €7.8 million. The project brings together 18 partners from eight EU Member States and focuses on strengthening the adoption of VR/AR technologies in healthcare, especially in less developed European regions.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) specialising in VR/AR healthcare innovation are sought to collaborate with five flagship SMEs - dotLumen, MedApp S.A., MEEVA Srl Benefit Corp, Metaskills and Virtuleap - and tackle one of 14 challenges.
The challenges cover critical areas such as:
• Market entry and adoption strategies
• Regulatory documentation
• GDPR and cybersecurity compliance
• Healthcare professional onboarding
• AI-driven training models
• Digital twins
• Clinical investigations
• Medical image segmentation
• Advanced wearable technologies
Successful applicants will benefit from:
• Up to €60,000 in lump sum funding

Eligibility criteriat:
• Qualify as an SME under EU Recommendation 2003/361/EC
• Be legally established in:
o A region covered by the VRHC consortium, or
o A less developed EU region, or
o An EU outermost region
