Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) is expanding its phytosanitary diagnostic services to include medicinal cannabis cultivation. This new service, already authorised by INFARMED – the Portuguese National Authority for Medicines and Health Products, will enable licensed companies to monitor and control pests and diseases, ensuring the quality and compliance of their production.
In recent years, the legal framework and growing demand for cannabis-based therapeutic products have driven the establishment of new companies dedicated to production for medicinal purposes. However, like any agricultural crop, cannabis is subject to increasingly frequent and diverse phytosanitary threats that can compromise productivity, quality and legal compliance.
About the service:
Now, with INFARMED authorisation, IPN offers a comprehensive portfolio of laboratory analyses for the detection and identification of pathogens in medicinal cannabis, including:
- Molecular and microbiological diagnosis for pathogen detection
- Preventive monitoring at different stages of the production cycle
- Issuing technical opinions in accordance with legal requirements and quality standards
In addition to these standardised services, IPN has the capacity to develop and perform specific tests tailored to each client's needs, reinforcing its role as a technology and innovation partner for the industry.
About IPN:
IPN, based in Coimbra, is a nationally and internationally renowned technological interface institution that supports companies and entrepreneurs in applied research, technological development, innovation, and product and process validation.
The Phytopathology Lab (FITOLAB) was the first national laboratory accredited in the field of plant health and is recognised by the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary Affairs (DGAV) as an Official Laboratory for the diagnosis of regulated plant diseases.
