Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) joined Technical Standardisation Committee Ad hoc 42 (CTA 42) of the Portuguese Quality Institute (IPQ), dedicated to developing Portuguese Standard NP 4595:2024 – “Approach to Quality and Innovation Management in Startups – Requirements and Guidelines”.

This standard was designed to address specific needs of startups, helping them to implement management processes focused on quality and innovation, through a structured framework with essential requirements and guidelines.

The adoption of NP 4595 can bring several advantages to startups, namely:
  • Alignment with international best practices in quality and innovation management;
  • Marketing of products and services that meet quality requirements and incorporate innovation;
  • Greater preparedness to interact with investors and financiers;
  • Mechanisms for systematic evaluation of results in key areas;
  • Enhanced involvement of management teams and employees;
  • Increased visibility and reputation through national and international recognition;
  • Certification that enhances management capabilities relevant for accessing national and European funding programmes.
NP 4595 comes up in the context of the development of the national entrepreneurship ecosystem and the publication of Law No. 21/2023, of 25 May, which sets up a new regime for startups and scaleups in Portugal.

More information on the requirements, methodology and rules applicable to the certification process can be found at https://storagewebsiteipq.blob.core.windows.net/website/Certificacao-de-Startups-pela-NP-4595.pdf.

In this context, IPQ and INOVA Quality Hub are promoting an online training course on 16 and 17 September on the NP 4595 standard, which guides quality and innovation management in start-ups. The course, aimed at entrepreneurs, startups, and incubators, will be led by Isabel Caetano, an expert with over 20 years of experience and a member of the committee that drafted NP 4595:2024. Registration is free until 10 September here.
