The first consortium meeting of the A3Shell project – Analysis and Machine Learning for Additive Manufacturing of Closed-Shell Structures – was held on July 17, 2025, at the facilities of HyperMetal, Lda.
In addition to the host company, the meeting was attended by representatives from the University of Coimbra and Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN). The A3Shell project focuses on metal additive manufacturing (AM) for the production of sealed, complex-geometry structures aimed at the aerospace sector. It brings together expertise in mechanical and materials engineering, computational simulation, and artificial intelligence.

The project’s main challenge is to develop a customized computational model capable of predicting defects in metal parts produced using Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), based on data collected during manufacturing as well as physical and chemical characterization of the parts. This innovative tool will allow manufacturers to optimize production strategies, moving away from trial-and-error methods and preventing defects that could compromise compliance with aerospace industry standards.
During the meeting, the technical documentation of the project was reviewed, and collaborative working dynamics within the consortium were established.
The project is funded by national and European funds through COMPETE2030-FEDER-02233400 under the A3Shell project (Nº 21381).
