i9Kiwi project, led by Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN), was one of the finalists of the Agricultural and Rural Inspiration 2023 (ARIA) Awards, from the EU CAP Network. This recognition is a testament to the project's contributions to addressing challenges within the Kiwi industry through innovative technology, optimising kiwi production and enhancing the sector's competitiveness.

The i9kiwi project, under the leadership of IPN, introduced a technological system that enables the comprehensive management of orchard elements and the monitoring of harmful agents. This approach has significantly impacted both the kiwi sector and Portuguese agriculture.

The project has resulted in increased kiwi production, a substantial reduction in phytopharmaceutical usage through improved plant protection practices, and the optimization of pesticide and fertiliser use, leading to reduced water and energy consumption and costs. Additionally, the i9Kiwi project provides valuable guidance for growers on optimal planting areas, pre-planting care, and suitable varieties, contributing to the efficient use of resources.

Furthermore, i9Kiwi actively promotes climate change adaptation, resilience, biodiversity, agroecological practices, and sustainable agriculture. It has played a pivotal role in advancing digitization and promoting literacy on sustainability, resilience, and agri-environmental practices within the agricultural sector.

The recognition of i9Kiwi as one of the finalists of the Agricultural and Rural Inspiration Awards exemplifies IPN's commitment to innovation, sustainability, and contribution to the agricultural landscape in Portugal. For further details on the i9Kiwi project, visit https://www.ipn.pt/laboratorio/LIS/projecto/86.
