Blueworks, a Portuguese technology startup incubated at Instituto Pedro Nunes, has been announced as the winner of The Technology Award by Optician magazine, one of the most important publications in the sector in the country. According to the jury, the technology was able to "demonstrate how it can be used to integrate primary and secondary care in Ophthalmology, with the potential to have a positive impact on patient health on a national scale".

Blueworks was awarded for its technology that allows British opticians to access relevant ophthalmological information obtained in hospital, enabling primary care health professionals to make better referral decisions for patients in hospital, and helping to reduce the number of unnecessary consultations in secondary care.

"We are delighted to receive this award," said Paulo Barbeiro, CEO of Blueworks. "This recognition is a strong indicator that our technology is making a difference in the ophthalmology sector in the UK."

According to NHS data, an estimated 150,000 patients in the UK are referred for unnecessary ophthalmology hospital appointments each year. This comes at a significant cost to the health system, but it also fills waiting lists and prevents other more urgent patients from being seen in time.

"We believe that our technology has the potential to improve the quality of eye care in the UK," said Barbeiro. "We are committed to working with the various NHS stakeholders to ensure that this technology is utilised for the benefit of patients."

Blueworks is a technology company based in Coimbra, Portugal. The company develops technological solutions for the healthcare sector.
