ECOSORV and SHELLUTIONPLUS projects get approved

Recently, our Laboratory for Wear, Testing & Materials (LED&MAT) had two approved and financed by CENTRO 2020 applications, within the scope of Aviso 01/SAICT/2021 – Proof of Concept Projects (PdC): ECOSORV and SHELLUTIONPLUS.
ECOSORV aims to create an advanced solution based on an absorbent and reusable clay aerogel eco to collect contaminated oil in aqueous environments. This will make possible the recuperation and valorization of an environmental passive in an active with economic potential.
This development promoted a higher productivity of the materials and the minimization of residual fluxes, enabling the regeneration of resources and the associated natural systems and contributing to the modernization and transition to a circular economy of important industrial sectors in the Centre Region.
Two companies from the district of Coimbra (EcoXperience and ACTIVEAEROGELS), which are fundamental to the future industrialization of this innovative technology and to the exploration of its potential in the market, are joining the IPN’s I&D work from the prior know-how to the laboratorial test and subsequent production of prototypes on a pre-industrial scale.

The SHELLUTIONPLUS project aims to utilize nanoporous eggshell in paint and paper loads for complementary research activities, based on knowledge generated in prior I&D projects.
The project’s goal is to develop paints and paper with different properties to the ones that exist now in the market via the acquisition of eggshell-based micronized products. Even though this new raw material’s chemical composition is identical to the chemical composition of conventional mineral loads like GCC and PCC, eggshell possesses unique and unsurpassed characteristics in natural or synthetic processes, which allows to better the final products’ properties.
This project is led by IPN and has the participation of OMYA, DEROVO and RAIZ, fundamental entities for the execution of research activities and the validations of results relative to the technical, economic, and environmental performance of the new products.
