Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) participated in the 10th National Forestry Congress, held at the Escola Superior Agrária de Coimbra from 5 to 9 October 2026.
As part of the congress, Luís Fonseca, researcher and technical lead of the Nematology area at IPN Plant Health Laboratory (FITOLAB), presented the poster “Diagnóstico de patógenos florestais de quarentena – O papel dos laboratórios acreditados na resiliência do setor florestal nacional”, featuring results from plant health analyses of three priority quarantine organisms: "Xylella fastidiosa, Bursaphelenchus xylophilusthe pine wood nematode responsible for Pine Wilt Disease, and Fusarium circinatum, the causal agent of pine pitch canker.
In the context of the growing risk of forest pests and diseases due to climate change and international plant trade, the poster highlighted the importance of plant health laboratories accredited under the NP EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard. Accreditation under this standard helps ensure technical competence, traceability, and the international harmonisation of diagnostic procedures.
Participation in the congress enabled IPN to share the results of its work in this field with the scientific and technical community of the forestry sector.
