On 8 June 2026, Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) hosted the seminar"Xylella fastidiosa: situação atual, epidemiologia e desafios de gestão”, an initiative dedicated to one of the main phytosanitary challenges of today.

The event took place in the Auditorium of Building D at IPN and brought together experts, representatives of public authorities and professionals from the agricultural sector to discuss the impact and evolution of the bacterium X. fastidiosawhose spread continues to pose a significant threat to a wide range of agricultural crops worldwide.

In a context marked by the need for coordinated responses based on scientific knowledge, the meeting promoted the sharing of technical and scientific information, as well as dialogue between the different entities responsible for the monitoring, prevention and management of X. fastidiosa.

The programme began with an opening session delivered by Joana Costa, Director of the Phytopathology Laboratory at IPN (FITOLAB), followed by a presentation from Clara Serra, from the Direção Geral de Alimentação e Veterinária (DGAV), on the current situation of X. fastidiosa in Portugal.

The scientific component featured Rodrigo Almeida, from the University of California, Berkeley (USA), who addressed the epidemiology and management of the bacterium in vineyards, drawing on the experience of the United States.

The seminar concluded with a discussion and Q&A session, during which participants and experts exchanged experiences and discussed the future challenges associated with the prevention and control of the bacterium.

This initiative was part of the activities of the IPN CTI project, supported by the base funding component of the Centres for Technology and Innovation (CTI), within the framework of the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Programme (PRR).

IPN is recognised as a Centre for Technology and Innovation under Order No. 2688/2022.
