In Portugal, the value chain of the space sector has several shortcomings:
(i) lack of systems integrators at the level of launchers and satellites;
(ii) incipient expression of sensor manufacturers (payloads) and satellite platform manufacturers (satellite bus);
(iii) incipient expression of operators, which only recently changed with the creation of the first and only Portuguese satellite operator – GEOSAT – currently the only operator in the Iberian Peninsula in the Earth Observation segment and one of the few worldwide with sub-metric capacity.
NEWSPACE, will impose a structural transformation in the specialization profile of the Portuguese economy, in particular in the Portuguese Space sector, through the creation of new innovative products and services, of greater technological complexity and higher added value, focused on the international market, with important spillover effects for the rest of the economy.
The goal of the project will be to increase the country's productive potential. In this context, space activity ensures direct investment in highly qualified jobs, with a consequent improvement in professional and higher education and the strengthening of the direct relationship between science and all productive sectors, since it has applications in industry, services and agriculture. This project positions the country in the complete value chain of a future strategic sector - the space sector - not only for Portugal, but also of recognized interest for Europe, given the high value of results and scope of application, multi-sectoral and trans-regional.
