Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) hosted a Bulgarian delegation on 22 April 2026, as part of an initiative dedicated to cooperation and knowledge-sharing within the Coimbra innovation ecosystem.
The welcome session began with Ana Seguro, Incubation Coordinator at IPN, that presented the organisation. This included a general overview of its activities, with emphasis on its role in promoting innovation, technology transfer, and supporting science- and technology-based entrepreneurship.
During the visit, the IPN incubation process was presented, from the initial generation of ideas through to the growth and consolidation stages of technology-based companies. The main challenges of the entrepreneurial journey were also addressed in a transparent manner, including cases of failure and the strategies adopted to overcome them.
The visit continued at Laboratory for Wear, Testing & Materials (LED&MAT), , where the delegation was accompanied by Ana Manaia, IPN’s Project Manager In this context, the laboratory’s technological offer in the fields of Circular Economy and Surface Engineering was presented.
In the field of Circular Economy, solutions were highlighted based on the use of natural raw materials and the valorisation of by-products and industrial waste, through recycling and reuse processes applied across various sectors.
In the area of Surface Engineering, IPN capabilities were showcased in the development, production, and characterisation of thin coatings, using sputtering technology. These coatings enhance the performance, durability, and functionality of components used in sectors such as tools and molds, transport, energy, medical technology, automotive, and aerospace.
