Needs-Led Innovation Fellowships (NIFs)

Challenge

Needs-Led Innovation Fellowships (NIFs) actively target the key challenges in healthcare: better patient care, improved population health and reduced costs.

Solution

The fellows identify a broad spectrum of possible healthcare challenges that represent under-met needs. They interrogate the problems and address clinical needs with solutions that have realistic commercial potential and a higher likelihood of benefitting the healthcare system. The resulting outputs have proven to have greater potential of reaching market maturity and delivering impact for patients.

Objectives, Activities and Results expected / achieved

The impact achieved cohesively and collaboravely across the various Fellowship programs is measurable through various pathways. We can count the number of new health entrepreneurs who have created startups upon completion of the fellowship programmes through follow up surveys. Follow up surveys and “keeping in touch” with fellows that have completed their entrepreneurship training helps to chart progress and assess impact trends that start when the learners apply their learning to real world situations.

More funding streams and investment opportuntiies are delivered to the national and European early-stage investor. This is measurable through qualitave survey and/or comparing investment success rate with technology-driven startups. With thorough training in the needs-led innovation process, Fellows transition into positions in industry better equipped to match clinically relevant needs with emerging technologies; this positively impacts the development and product design processes in companies. (The effect of this is long-term and difficult to track and isolate solely to the fellowship programmes.) The Fellowship programmes act as a launchpad for fellows wishing to shi careers into the healthcare industry, resutilng in a completely new type of employee who brings a combined specialist expertise and health innovator profile. The value of this is obvious for the fellows as it broadens their job opportunities. The value for industry is more intangible but the added cross-disciplinarity should ensure better intrapreneurial activities and processes inhouse. The metrics can be measured by follow up surveys tracking the trend shis from commercial industry into healthcare industry.

Main KPIs:
• Investment attracted by start-ups supported by KICs - >1M €;

• Programme Attractiveness and Demand - 400%;

• Number of Health Professionals and Executives trained - >40.
