NABITEX
Innovative Technical Textiles, Developed Truth Natural Fibers for Habitat Application

Challenge

The project NABITEX, funded by INTERREG SUDOE, aimed to strengthen the capacity of innovation and development of SME in the textile sector of the SUDOE region through the valorisation of natural resources (natural fibers) for the incorporation of this fibers in the production of innovative technical products, contributing to increase the competitiveness of the companies of the SUDOE region through a cooperation between different stakeholders.

Solution

Main Objective:
To strengthen research, technological development and innovation.

The main objective was to promote the incorporation of these fibers in solutions for the habitat segment (home textiles e materials for construction). With a focus on natural fibers produced in the SUDOE region, such as hemp, the project developed and provided innovative sustainable solutions that allowed the differentiation of products for the industrial sector .

Objectives, Activities and Results expected / achieved

Achieves Results:
The project focused on the following R&D activities:
• Fiber preparation and processing: culture optimization, machinery development for both harvesting, extracting the fiber and transforming it into yarn;

• Development of solutions for home textiles and development of solutions for a construction materials and composites, which resulted in 8 pre-industrial prototypes, 3 of which were developed by LED&MAT: office screen, acoustic wall panel and a floor lamp;

• Scientific publications: 4
- Industrial Hemp Fibers (https://www.mdpi.com/2079-6439/7/12/106);

- The Effect of Halloysite Nanotubes on the Fire Retardancy Properties of Partially Biobased Polyamide 610 (https://www.mdpi.com/2073-4360/12/12/3050);

- Interface Modification, Water Absorption Behaviour and Mechanical Properties of Injection Moulded Short Hemp Fiber-Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites (https://www.mdpi.com/2073-4360/13/10/1638);

- Development and Characterization of Environmentally Friendly Wood Plastic Composites from Biobased Polyethylene and Short Natural Fibers Processed by Injection Moulding (https://www.mdpi.com/2073-4360/13/11/1692).
