The closing seminar of the ShellMould project "A new integrative mould concept to maximise the production of glass packaging - affirmation in the international market", took place on January 27th.

This project, funded by the Compete 2020 program, allowed to strengthen the innovation and development capacity of companies in the glass industry sector, using a concept that allows to integrate base materials and Surface Engineering solutions and, simultaneously, to optimise an effective cooling system from the point of view of heat extraction and temperature control on the moulding surface.

IPN participated in this project through the Laboratory for Testing, Wear and Materials (LED&MAT).

With a budget of about 828 thousand euros, the ShellMould project successfully achieved the outlined goals, namely:
  • Development of a bi-component mould concept of the shell + moulding core type;
  • Development of a numerical model adaptable to the mould geometry and constitution, which simulates the thermal flows and the temperature distribution on the moulding surface;
  • Study and development of surface engineering solutions, for the adaptation to the introduced concept of the new mould.
As a main result, the efficiency of the new mould from the point of view of cooling, in comparison with the traditional mould, stands out, with a temperature decrease of 30ºC on the mould surface during the production of glass containers, estimating a significant impact on the reduction of energy costs in the medium term. Thus, it is possible to foresee important gains in productivity and national and international competitiveness of the companies involved.

From the point of view of the exploitation of the results, the publication of 3 scientific articles (one already submitted and two under conclusion) and a provisional patent application (under development) concerning the innovative cooling system, developed for the new mould concept, should be highlighted.

In summary, the success of the industrial application of this new mould concept, associated to an innovative approach to its development, was ensured by a consortium composed by highly qualified people, which allowed to respond to the challenges imposed by the global market, by implementing new engineering solutions and, in this way, extending the life time and performance of the moulds, ensuring the increase of the production rates and the reduction of manufacturing costs.
