TrainR4U: distance learning course for medical education in abdominal ultrasound
RTD Laboratories

The first edition of the Clinical Abdominal Ultrasound Training Course in Portugal took place in December. Certified by the University of Coimbra, the main goal of this training course is to enable current and future health professionals to acquire or improve their skills in this imaging technique.

Integrated into the European project EIT Health "TrainR4U - Training Robot for Ultrasound", the training course uses innovative robotic technology, with a provisional patent application from Instituto Pedro Nunes used for distance training and aims at the combined learning of abdominal ultrasound assisted by robots to provide ultrasounds more effectively, safely and quickly.

The course had 17 participants, clinicians from various specialties. The objectives were to train health professionals interested in acquiring knowledge, skills, and experience in the use of ultrasound; to identify pathologies using ultrasound images; to perfect the practice of ultrasound in the abdominal region, incorporating the knowledge of the clinical practice.

The programme included 40 hours (1,5 ECTS) divided into 30 hours of asynchronous online modules and 10 hours of practical sessions taught by a specialized academic team from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra. In these sessions, besides using innovative robotic technology, the students had the opportunity to use two ultrasound systems equipped with the latest imaging technologies and AI-enabled tools, thanks to a partnership between TrainR4U and Siemens Healthineers Portugal.

The practical sessions of the first edition of the Clinical Abdominal Ultrasound Training Course took place at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra.

The TrainR4U project is led by Instituto Pedro Nunes, through the Laboratory of Automatics and Systems, and the consortium, besides the University of Coimbra, also includes the Hospital of Coimbra and University Centre, Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu (Spain), Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), Sorbonne Université (France), Academisch Ziekenhuis Groningen (Netherlands), Tecnalia Research & Innovation (Spain), Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris (France) and Sensing Future Technologies.
