IPN, through the Laboratory for Informatics and Systems (IPNLis), will participate in the H2020 project ReMAP - Real-time Condition-based Maintenance for Adaptive Aircraft Maintenance Planning, recently approved by the European Commission.

ReMAP aims at radically transforming the aircraft maintenance paradigm, bringing a significant increase in safety and economic gains. In order to turn the maintenance of large airlines safer and less time-consuming, the consortium will develop an innovative technology system based on Artificial Intelligence, combining intelligent algorithms capable of processing huge volumes of data in real time, machine learning technics, neural networks (brain functioning inspired) and a digital platform for integration and cloud computing.

This innovative solution, which will be tested on 50 aircraft from KLM's fleet (20 Boeing-787s and 30 Embraer 190s) will, in a near future, allow to achieve "predictive maintenance, i.e., aircraft maintenance, currently established on fixed intervals of time or use, to be executed based or on the actual state of the components in terms of their life cycle, determining the right time for their replacement" as explained by the coordinators of the Portuguese team, Carlos Lisbon Bento, Bernardete Ribeiro and Paulo Rupino da Cunha.

ReMAP's consortium, led by TUDelft, brings together 13 partners from 7 countries, including major names in aeronautics industry such as KLM, Embraer Portugal and ONERA. On the Portuguese side, the University of Coimbra and Optimal Structural Solutions also participate.

In fact, this project will bring to Portugal an investment of around 1.3M € to be dedicated to the development of this solution by Instituto Pedro Nunes, University of Coimbra, Embraer Portugal and Optimal Structural Solutions.
ReMAP had an exceptionally high score given by the European Commission's evaluators, a result not very common in Horizon 2020, the European Programme for Research and Innovation. This is a highly competitive programme that only the best research and knowledge valorisation institutions can access.

On the other hand, this project strengthens the cooperation between the University of Coimbra and IPN, reinforcing the complementarity between the two institutions in activities of fundamental research, technological development, technology transfer and valorisation of knowledge.
